Merkel and Suga agreed on cooperation
German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga agreed on September 22 during a telephone conversation to work closely to create a free and open Indo-Pacific region and work together to contain coronavirus. In a telephone conversation with Merkel, Suga said he wanted to further strengthen relations between Japan and Germany. Merkel, congratulating Suga on taking office as prime minister, said she looked forward to working with the new Japanese leader to develop German-Japanese ties. Recall that Yoshihide Suga, the leader of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, was elected Prime Minister of Japan on September 16. He will hold this post until the end of the term of office of the retired Shinzo Abe in September 2021, if he does not hold early elections.
