On 18 June 1940 General Charles de Gaulle urged the French people to continue resistance against Nazi Germany, despite the collaborationist policy of the government of Henri Petain. The General addressed his fellow citizens on radio from London, where he fled the day before from Bordeaux. From little known even in the homeland of General de Gaulle during the Second world war became the most influential French politician. This allowed him later to take the presidency.
